- 13.1% of the world’s population is hungry. That’s roughly 925 million people who go undernourished on a daily basis.
- The world produces enough food to feed all 7 billion people who live in it.
- The difference between hunger and malnutrition is that malnutrition means the body does not have the necessary vitamins and nutrients necessary to grow or fight off disease.
- In 2010, an estimated 7.6 million children — more than 20,000 a day — died from hunger.
- Hunger is often passed from mother to child. Each year, 17 million children are born underweight because their mothers are malnourished.
- 40 percent of food is thrown out in the US every year, or about $165 billion worth. All of this uneaten food could feed 25 million Americans.
- It costs just US $0.25 per day to provide a child with all of the vitamins and nutrients he or she needs to grow up healthy. (Source: WFP, 2011).
- Hunger is the world’s number 1 health risk; it kills more people every year than AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined.
